Happy Valentine’s Day, readers, and welcome to another round up of the most important news in charity land.
As is tradition, animal charities across the UK have posted on social media this Valentine’s Day about pooches in their care looking for a loving home.
Diary hates to pick favourites, but this year Lawson from Dogs Trust West Calder caught the eye. Special mention to pals June and Angie from the Glasgow branch as well, who celebrated Galentines day together this week.
Nolero
This month, comedian Richard Herring is raising money for Scope by bravely abstaining from eating Soleros for 28 days.
Herring usually eats one cold exotic-flavoured treat a day but has heroically managed to resist their charms for a couple of weeks in February, raising over six grand in the process.
As Herring rightly states, the fundraising feat he has set himself is “harder than running a marathon or swimming the channel” and he has urged supporters to join him by knocking Soleros on the head for a few weeks and donating the savings to the disability charity.
Diary cannot fathom enduring four winter weeks without the chilling comfort of a fruity ice cream lolly but would encourage anyone more courageous to take on the challenge.
‘Don’t dump your dirty knickers on us’
Finally, earlier this month, a charity shop in Lincolnshire complained that members of the public were donating unsavoury items including unwashed undergarments.
“Some people bring us things that are broken, dirty, ripped or stained. We can't sell those items in our shops and it costs us,” Natalie Shaw, who runs the Doris Banham Dog Rescue, told BBC News.
“We have dirty underwear, we have people that clean out their kitchens and bring us roasting dishes full of fat.”
Diary likes to support their local charity shop and could do with a new roasting dish but would prefer a non-greasy version if poss.
