Which charities have got Christmas media partnerships?

11 Dec 2018 Voices

It’s that time of the year again, where the hitherto separate worlds of charity, media and retail come together in the spirit of giving that sets Christmas apart. We take a look at which charities have secured the backing of some of the key players at Christmas time.

The Guardian and Observer

Following on from the Guardian’s award-winning coverage of the Windrush immigration scandal from earlier in the year, the newspapers have teamed up with five separate charities which support those affected by the government’s so “hostile immigration environment”.

The Guardian Observer Charity Appeal 2018 is supporting the Law Centres Network, the Refugee and Migrant Centre, the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, Praxis Community Projects and Runnymede.

News UK

The various publications under the News UK banner are supporting a host of different charities.

The Times is supporting four charities over Christmas: Surfers Against Sewage, Mercy Corps, a humanitarian charity working in Yemen; St Mungo’s homelessness charity and Cyrenians, a homelessness charity based in Scotland.

The Sunday Times meanwhile is running an appeal for Crisis.

The Sun has announced it will be raising funds for Bliss, the charity for families of premature children, while The Sun on Sunday has announced it will be supporting Children with Care.

Last year News UK’s publications raised over £1.5m over Christmas.

The London Evening Standard and the Independent

The London Evening Standard and the Independent have teamed up with Sir Elton John to support Aids Free. The appeal aims to give all HIV and Aids sufferers’ access to the life-saving drugs which now exist for those suffering from the conditions.

To raise money for its appeal, the Evening Standard is currently running its Aids Free auction, where readers can bid for a number of prizes, including a “personal styling session with Victoria Beckham and a limited edition photograph signed by Sir Elton John” as well as tickets to his farewell world tour.

All donations up to £2m will be match funded by the government.

The Telegraph

Over at the Telegraph, the newspaper has chosen mental health as its major fundraising issue for 2018. It has pledged to support three charities who support suffers of mental health issues  - Changing Faces, YoungMinds, and The Fire Fighters Charity, which offers psychological support to firefighters in the wake of major incidents.

The newspaper is aiming to raise more than the £560,000 it raised in its 2017 appeal.

Daily Mirror

The Mirror is calling on its readers to support its End Hunger, Feed a Family Christmas Appeal, with all money raised going to the Trussell Trust – one of the UK’s largest foodbank providers.

The Mirror said: “every penny you donate could help one less child go without a hot Christmas lunch, support a family which is destitute because of the five-week delay to Universal Credit, or put food on the table for someone who has been forced to choose between heating or eating.”

The i is hoping to raise £125,000 for the MS Society.

Daily Mail

The Daily Mail has teamed up with Helpforce and the NHS, to call on readers to donate their time and volunteer with the NHS in 2019.

Those aged 16 and over can pledge to give a day, or a few hours a week to either their local NHS hospital or healthcare service, or to a number of charities including the Royal Voluntary Service, Marie Curie and the British Red Cross.
